Meet Jania Knaff

Jania Knaff is an 8th grade student at Innes CLC who exemplifies what it means to be a young leader with purpose. Throughout her middle school career, she has maintained an exceptional academic record, consistently achieving near a 4.0 GPA, while actively engaging in extracurricular and leadership opportunities.

 

Jania is a member of her school’s softball team, demonstrating discipline, teamwork, and perseverance both on and off the field. Within Students With A Goal (SWAG), she serves as a student leader and youth speaker, confidently sharing her experiences and representing the voice of her peers.

 

Her leadership extends beyond the classroom and program space. Knaff is also a participant in the City of Akron’s STEP Program, and has spoken in front of key community partners, including Youth Advisory groups, Bath Church, and First Congregational Church of Hudson, helping to highlight the impact of SWAG on youth development.

 

Through her involvement in various community-based leadership and engagement opportunities, Janiah continues to build strong skills in communication, critical thinking, and advocacy. She aspires to become a pediatric nurse, driven by a passion to care for and uplift others.

Jania represents the mission of SWAG in action.

Words From Our Students

Meet Darrion Owens

Darrion Owens is a 10th grade student at Buchtel CLC and a dedicated member of Students With A Goal (SWAG) since the 7th grade. Over the years, Darrion has consistently embodied Joy, resilience, and excellence, growing into a strong example of perseverance and leadership.

 

Despite facing challenges, Owens has made significant academic strides, raising his performance to a 3.5 GPA in recent years, a testament to his determination and commitment to his future. He aspires to become a construction manager and business owner, with a vision of building both structures and opportunities within his community.

 

Owens is also deeply passionate about basketball, having participated in youth leagues throughout his childhood. Beyond athletics, he has used his voice within SWAG to help foster important conversations around youth challenges, mental health, and support systems, particularly for young Black males.

He strongly believes in changing the narrative around his peers, sharing:

“The community cannot see us as always bad. They have to see us giving and being supportive to others.”

 

Owens represents the power of growth, voice, and purpose; demonstrating how young men, when supported and empowered, can lead change and uplift those around them.
